Is Nicaragua safe for travelling?

YES! It is certainly no problem to visit Nicaragua with an easy conscience. In fact, we highly recommend getting to know this authentic country with its warm-hearted people. Peace and quite reign both in the city and the countryside. At no point do visitors feel unsafe or unwelcome. In fact, Nicaragua has a remarkable recent safety record among the Central American countries according to the German agency of foreign affairs (dated June 2023).

Politics and Democracy? Where does Nicaragua stand?

This is not the place for political opinions. It is a fact that Daniel Ortega and his party FSLN have been governing Nicaragua since 2007. This continuity has lent the Nicaragua stability in many regards. Politics have always been and will always be a dynamic process with controverse opinions and developments. Just like any other country in the world, so does Nicaragua moves towards a future that will undoubtedly require change and adaption. It is our sincere hope, regarding Nicaragua and other countries, that this process will peacefully provide a better future.

Nicaragua is well worth a visit and the present moment is a great moment for that. The country and its people deserve it and tourism generates important income for many families.

Good Reasons to visit Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan People

are unique and most admirable. It is hard to put your finger on it… is it their stoic serenity or the enviable patience? Or is their easy inner balance, their natural friendliness or frequent poetic vein? Nicaraguans are unassuming with steel inside. And best of all, they often have time: time to greet you with a warm open smile and a spontaneous chat – no matter whether you are asking directions or inviting your waiter to sit down and share a drink with you.

Colonial Splendour

Founded in 1524, the colonial cities Granada and León are Nicaragua’s, and indeed Central America’s, oldest. An ancient rivalry binds the two cities. However, they share similarly charming colonial architecture with its shaded courtyards. Colourful facades, weathered clay roof tiles, lively markets and a colonial church on every other corner complete the scenery. There is a story, a history being told through these cities’ venerated heritage. Go for a stroll and savour the vibe of a turbulent past that includes colonial dominance, pirate attacks and a number of revolutions.  Why not settle down at one of the many cafés and soak up the flair!

Volcanos

Nicaragua’s imposing volcanoes are as numerous as they are diverse. One highlight is certainly the Masaya volcano. A visit is particularly recommended at night, when you can see the red lava glowing and spurting deep down in the crater. Ometepe Island in the middle of the huge Nicaragua Lake also deserve a mention. Two volcanoes, the ConcepciĂłn and the Maderas, form the striking double cone silhouette. An ascent is only recommended for very good hikers. The Cerro Negro near LeĂłn is also suitable for less aspiring hikers and offers fantastic views, deep black lava rock and the opportunity to toboggan down. And then there is the Mombacho, the Laguna de Apoyo, the Telica and El Hoyo and many more!!!

Street Scenes

The scenes of everyday life: Nicaragua must be experienced with open eyes and an open heart. Because no matter where you look, there is something to see. Nicaragua is authentic. Many people face great challenges in order to go about their daily lives with only a few, simple means at their disposal. They show amazing creativity, modesty and calmness, whether this concerns means of transportation, working methods, trade or production. You can’t help but reflect on your own comfortable life and take stock. To be grateful. To become frugal and patient. These are images that fascinate and get under your skin.

Insider Tip

Still an insider tip! Nicaragua’s tourism is still in its infancy and has had to overcome several hurdles in recent years.
