Visiting family in Costa Rica, I was not only hoping to escape the lockdown in Germany but was also keen to see Costa Rica from above with my paraglider.

In the internet I discovered Nico, whose webpage appealed to me. Paragliding with him in Costa Rica: Nico was to become my guide.

Having arrived in Costa Rica, I shared my expectations and we made plans over a beer. Nico assured me that everything would work as planned – and it turned out to be true.

The next morning, Nico picked me up and we left for the Pacific. We had breakfast at the crocodile bridge and then headed straight towards the launch.

First site was Dominical, in the southwest of Costa Rica: a wonderful launch, several hundred metres high, landing on the beach (emergency landing on a soccer field) without any difficulty even at high tide.

I launched three times, the 3rd flight was really good and long (30 minutes) on the first day. We did the same on the second day.

Nico picked me up and drove me back to the launch as many times as I wanted, was highly motivated and assisted me to develop my skills.

In total we visited four different sites.

In Caldera, on the coast, the wind was too strong so that we diverted inland, where the wind was also strong, so we visited Jacó. However, the best cycles there had already died down so that after two flights the flying day seemed to be over.

After the slightly unfortunate ”blown-away” day, Nico suggested to drive down to the beach to practise and learn the reverse launch.

Said and done: I can now reverse launch and with this great success we sat down to enjoy two happy landing beers.

The last flying day in Turrialba the newly learned reverse launch came in handy with strong wind conditions – otherwise I could not have launched. A beautiful one-hour thermal flight alongside vultures was the grand finale to my Costa Rica flying.

The five days I spent with Nico were a pure joy for flying – and the same for the companionship.

New to the various launch sites, we booked Nico (Skyhigh) for two days to provide support. He helped us out excellently with a 4×4, information on the sites, criteria on the weather and in the air support via radio. We visited Jacó and Turrialba and were able to do some amazing flights. Additionally, he provided abundant information on the country. Very pleasant and friendly contact! Very flexible and easy communication. It would be a pleasure to repeat!
